This checklist of the paperback covers of George Ziel could never have been started without the help of Art Scott. And it would never have been finished without the help of Ruben at Paperbackart.com. Art and Ruben, my friends, this list is dedicated to you.
Thanks also to Tom Lesser, Robert Speray, Lynn Maguire, Rebecca Kalin, Jerome Podwil, Hector Garrido, Elaine Duillo, Fred Taraba, Brian Emrich, Walt Reed & Roger Reed at Illustration House, Tim Friesen at Pandora’s Books, Grant Thiessen at bookit enterprises, Robert Wiener, Bruce Timm, Cosimo Scianna, Rolf Erikson, Richard Berenson at the Society of Illustrators, Bruce Black at bookscans.com, Martin Blank at bookendsusedbooks.com, Michael Young at UConn-Storrs, Vincent Di Fate, Viola Turek at the John Paul II Polish Center, and Ryszard Zielezinski.
The checklist of paperback covers presented here is not intended as the complete checklist. It is the first draft of a work in progress. We are attempting to create a first list from scratch. It is entirely possible that there are uncredited covers on this list I am mistaken about. As I have told you before, I’m no art expert; I’m just a guy who likes paperback books. Corrections and additions are welcomed. Certainly there are more Ziel covers out there waiting to be rediscovered and added to this list. But for now here is a start: some 300 covers that I suggest are all the work of George Ziel.
Next list: Without setting out ahead of time to do so, my researches and interests have led me over the years to create a series on the authors of Nightstand Books. Past lists have featured Andrew Shaw, Alan Marshall, Clyde Allison, two Don Hollidays, Dean Hudson and Curt Cannon aka John Dexter/JX Williams. In that spirit, my 2012 catalog will be:
