SLOAN AT MERIT
By Lynn Munroe
When I was a young and impressionable paperback collector I
loved those flashy sexy girlie covers that existed only to jolt a potential
customer into buying that book. But then one day I got a copy of Merit 501,
KISS OF DEATH by Malcolm Knight. The art was signed Sloan.
At first glance it looked like something for me, a
hardboiled noir story with a tough guy detective carrying a babe like the sexy
cover of Ace D1, TOO HOT FOR HELL. But then I looked again and noticed
something rather disconcerting. The woman in his arms was facing the viewer,
and she was not pin-up pretty, she looked dead. There was a faraway forever
look in her eyes, and her face was that of a haunted corpse, all cheekbones and
terror. This looked more like a horror story. Then I went back to that title:
DEATH. The yin and yang themes of sex and death have long been used to sell
books and movies and popular entertainment. I’m not sure what it says about us,
but we respond to it. We buy the products. And this book had the promise of
both sex and death right there in the title: KISS OF DEATH. Her dead eyes were
so haunting to me that it was only later that I noticed that the man has dead
eyes too, he is the walking dead. So two things were clear: Sloan was
different, and Sloan was a freaking genius of the dark side.
Sloan’s covers are all like that. They are arresting.
Something catches you and drags you in. You try to look away and you can’t.
They are different, not for everybody.
Merit Books were published by Camerarts, the early 1960s
Chicago company run by Joseph and Frank Sorren. They also published Novel Books
and the magazines Men’s Digest, Rascal and Best For Men. For a small-time
low-rent paperback house, Merit managed to publish a lot of still-interesting
stuff, like the tough guy novels of Ennis Willie and the Richard Prather rip-offs by Jerry Goff. They also used the
small-timers standard practice of republishing their books a year or two later
with new titles as if they were brand new books.
A checklist of the Merit Books follows. Several of the
Merit covers are unattributed, but most of them fall into three categories
(until the later Merits, which change focus to nonfiction and often have text
covers). There are photo covers, and there are painted covers by either Sloan
or Bonfils. The photo covers range from beautiful to ugly, sometimes using
garish yellow and red tones. The covers by Robert Bonfils are, as always with
this marvelous cover artist, gorgeous. Bonfils’ story has been told elsewhere.
Very little is known today in the vintage paperback world about the artist who
signed his Merit covers as “Sloan”.
According to the Artists Index in Graham Holroyd’s
PAPERBACK PRICES AND CHECKLIST, the Merit artist is Irving Sloane, who was also
credited as the artist of Flagship 717, BAWDY SONGS & BACKROOM BALLADS. Mr. Holroyd told me that information was
“on the database” when he purchased it from a previous Paperback Price Guide
publisher to create a new volume. There are a couple problems with the Irving
Sloane attribution. The art on Flagship 717 does not look anything like the art
on the Merits, and the signature “Sloane” with an “E” looks nothing at all like
the signature on the early Merits. If you take a good look at the Merit
signature, there is no evidence of an “E” at the end.
Holroyd’s Price Guide is wrong, the Merit Sloan was not
Irving Sloane. Anyone calling them “Sloane covers” is mistaken. My friend and
fellow researcher Astrid Daley-Douglas tracked Sloan down and talked to him in
2005. His name was Richard Sloan. He was born in Chicago in 1935 and he
attended the American Academy of Art there. He worked first as a commercial
illustrator in Chicago, and while working there in 1960 he and his fellow
Chicagoan Robert Bonfils got the assignment to provide covers for the Chicago
publisher Merit Books. Sloan then went to work as the staff artist at the
Lincoln Park Zoo, where he began to explore his true calling as a wildlife
artist. When he left in 1966, he went on to become known as the “dean of
rainforest painters”. His wildlife and rainforest paintings were exhibited
worldwide. When Astrid talked to him he acknowledged that as a young artist he
had painted those Merit covers. Many of his fine later paintings are online,
and if you look at his signature there you notice it matches the signature on
the Merit covers. Richard Sloan died in 2007.
There were countless artists churning out paperback covers
for the booming “adult book” market of the early 1960s. The covers ranged from
the best – art by Robert Maguire, the pin-up style art of Paul Rader at
Midwood, and the beautiful covers by Robert Bonfils - to the sloppy and
unattractive covers put on pirated editions or books by no-budget fly-by-night
publishing houses. There was one artist who always painted the woman on the
cover from behind, apparently only because he didn’t have the talent to paint a
believable human face.
But Richard Sloan was unique in my estimation. His covers
fit not on the beautiful end nor on the unattractive end, but somewhere in
between. He had his own very unique view of the world around him, and I doubt
many ever mistook the work of any other artist as a Sloan cover. Luckily for us
today, many of the first Merits feature that Sloan signature, so we can get a
strong sense of his style and match it to similar later Merits that are not
signed. Unlike most of the other sixties illustrators, Sloan does not seem
interested in beauty. It is as if he sees these stories as sordid affairs with
their titles always showcasing words like “abnormal” and “perverted”. His
characters look a little abnormal too. They are slightly stylized – the women
always have feral eyes, razor sharp cheekbones and long limbs. The men always
look like blue-collar shop foremen who have had a pretty rough life. There are
none of the pretty male models found in most of the other artists’ work.
Sloan and Merit start together, the first Merits all appear
to be Sloan covers. The very first Merit, BOUDOIR TREACHERY, is uncredited and
rather abstract, it’s hard to guess who the artist is, but Sloan is probably as
likely as anyone else. The second Merit, UNTAMED PASSION, is signed Sloan, and
as we recognize his unique hallmarks we realize all the other early Merits are
Sloan covers too. KISS OF DEATH is the sixth book they published, and it
captures the essence of Sloan in one fell swoop.
I once read a book called (Autobiography Of) THE PERVERT!
Well, right from that title alone we know we’re not going to get Peter
Cottontail. Written by “Myles Neville”, one of the many personae of a felonious
writer named Jerry Goff, this one was about a sick guy who got his pleasure not
from loving women but from murdering them. And there, on the cover, he’s ogling
a dead woman, another scary Sloan babe with dead eyes. With that same morbid
fascination that makes us turn to look at an accident site or read on about a
serial killer, I opened the book. Nothing could make me stop thinking about
those horrifying faces on the cover.
Of course (thank God) not all Sloan cover women are dead.
But his living ladies usually have something different about them anyway. They
achieve various levels of scary. Some of them, to be brutally honest, are
downright ugly. In a reversal of the usual attractive pin-up art of the era,
Sloan created a series of purposefully non-beautiful covers that rivet our
attention. I believe Sloan did this on purpose. He could draw a pretty woman
when he had to, as some of his covers suggest. But he did not seem very interested
in doing standard covers with a pretty woman and handsome man. I suspect he had
his own agenda. I think Sloan was an artist who wanted to create works in his
own unique style. He knew how to mix sex and death like a cocktail. His main
trick involved combining a big-breasted body with a frightening face, giving us
a double dose of sexy and scary in the same instant. The result was compelling
and intoxicating to many in his red-blooded virile manly market.
Look at his cover for PRIVATE ORGY, Merit 537. We all
understand why this naked beauty would not be face to face with the big man,
but down there at crotch level. But Sloan then throws us the twist. Look again.
There appears to be a primitive face formed by the leaves that approach her face
as if to kiss her. There seems to be a hidden message – is she going to kiss
the big man or some primitive tree god?
Merit 558 is PERVERTED LOVER by Bill Lauren. Although the
cover art is not signed, we recognize that style, that face with those
cheekbones. But how does Sloan convey to us that this woman is a perverted
lover?
She’s draped across a sofa on her stomach with her
skin-tight Capri pants accentuating her ample derriere. On the back cover,
without the garish yellow, she looks positively pantsless. Her pose matches
that of an infamous Playboy Playmate centerfold photo of Yvette Vickers from
July 1959. Yvette lies half-naked across a couch, her bottom turned up.
Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner was surprised at the reaction
to the appearance of this photograph. He was accused of perversion, of
suggesting and thereby condoning sodomy with this image. Hefner’s response was
that apparently his repressed critics were not aware that there were other
sexual positions available beside the missionary position. Sloan seems to be
joining the critics, suggesting that this pose obviously qualifies as
perverted.

What are we to make of Sloan covers such as LADY KILLER,
Merit 515, by Malcolm Knight? The front cover text tells us this is about “a
voluptuous blonde”, but the woman Sloan gives us appears to be neither voluptuous
nor blonde. With her birdlike features and the strange red shadows that make
her arm look longer than her body, she looks more grotesque than voluptuous.
Sloan’s strange collection of paperback covers make the
Merits even more interesting. Rife with scary ladies, strange men and even a
monkey, they continue to fascinate fifty years later.
