Rader fell ill and was hospitalized in 1967. Mrs. Rader told me he took a year off, but the notebooks prove her memory faulty. Rader slows down but continues selling art every month. There is a gap of more than 30 days between the completion dates on 252 & 253, which must have been when he was hospitalized.

Midwood 34-930 – ANYTHING GOES by Peter McCurtin, 1968. Peter McCurtin went to work for Harry Shorten as a writer- editor in 1968; this is the first of his countless books for Shorten. McCurtin would find fame, not at Midwood, but writing Westerns and action-packed men’s adventure series for Shorten at Tower and Belmont (later called Belmont Tower) and Leisure.

Midwood 34-909 – CONNIE by Beauchamp (Robert Silverberg), 1968. Reprints Midwood 18 (and Midwood 74, which had a different Rader cover). Copyright page states Sixth Printing. This is an unusual notebook entry because Rader shows they paid him for repainting this at the same rate they paid for new covers. It looks fairly identical to Midwood 18 to me, except Rader’s signature is now gone.

Reprinted later as Midwood M125-68 (1970) with photo cover, making this one of Midwoods most reprinted titles.

Both the first and last names are spelled differently on the first edition of the same book – Sloane. When Rader painted this it was scheduled to be 34-958, but a different number appears on the printed book.

Midwood 34-108 – PLEASURE MACHINE by Lord, 1968. The Midwoods had been numbered sequentially since Midwood 7, so after 35-999 the next book, a Tower, should have been 42-1000. Midwood Tower chose to drop the last 0 and call it 42-100, confusing a lot of collectors because there already was a Midwood 100. So five-digit Midwoods from 42-100 thru 38-337 have dropped their final zero and go after the 900s, not before 34-395, which is where the five-digit numbering began.
