Rader 1966
186. September 1965
– Midwood “Faculty Wife”. Blond in tight knit top (white) and fitted green
skirt walking on campus, boys whistling at her.
Midwood 32-588 – FACULTY WIFE by Ellis, 1966. |

|
187. September 1965
– Midwood “Nice & Easy”. Blonde in bikini – man with beach towel behind –
Nevada dude
ranch.
Midwood 32-599 – FREE AND EASY by
Hamilton, 1966. |

|

|
188. November 1965 – Midwood 8 b&w inside for “His For The
Asking” & “No Holds Barred”.
Midwood 34-581 – ANGEL FACE /
HOUSE PET – Brooks / Balmer, 1966. Photo cover. Rader would later do covers
for books titled HIS FOR THE ASKING & NO HOLDS BARRED. Not sure if the
books were shuffled around or if those were original manuscript titles for
ANGEL FACE and HOUSE PET. |

|
189. November 1965 - Midwood “Winner Take All” Ellis – Dark haired
girl in baby doll, sitting on bed with phone,
Las Vegas at night thru window.
Midwood 32-602 – NO LAST NAMES by Ellis, 1966. |
190. November 1965 –
Midwood “Snow Bunnies” Ellis – Three girls – blond in terrycloth robe sitting
on floor in foreground, two girls in ski outfits in ski lodge.
Midwood 32-618 – SNOW BUNNIES by Ellis, 1966. |

|
191. December 1965 –
Midwood – 8 inside b&w for #34-595 (Vendetta – No Last Names).
Midwood 34-595 – PARTY PARTY /
DUTCH TREAT by West / Williams, 1966. Photo cover. Sometimes we match Rader’s
notebook entries by title, sometimes by description. But in this case he
gives us the book number. And although the titles are different, the book
does include interior illustrations by Paul Rader.
The books are switched inside,
so plates 1-4 are for DUTCH TREAT. Rader would re-do plate 6 for the cover of
Midwood 33-683, TEST OF LOVE. |

|

|
192. December 1965 –
Midwood “Girl on the Run”. Brunette hitch-hiking - sport car coming up the
road, sunny sky, western flat landscape.
Midwood 32-614 – GIRL ON THE RUN by Holbrook, 1966. |

|
193. December 1965 – Midwood “Baby Sitter”. Blonde teenager
undressing behind bush in moonlight – two boys in lake.
Midwood 34-677 – DOLL BABY / BEACH PARTY by Townsend /
Nelson, 1966. |
194. January 1966 – Midwood 8 b&w inside for double
novel #34-610 – “Melody” & “From Me To You”.
Midwood 34-610 – NAUGHTY BUT NICE / FROM ME TO YOU by Ellis
/ Hayes, 1966. Photo cover. Rader will re-do plate 3 in color for Midwood
37-141, TEEN-AGE SEX PARTY. NAUGHTY
BUT NICE was Midwood’s new title for Joan Ellis’s “Melody”. |

|

|
195. January 1966 – Midwood Double Novel #34-623 – Blonde in black
panties holding college pennant.
Midwood 34-623 – HIP CHICK /
DARERS GO FIRST by Baker / Ellis, 1966. Author’s names are switched on the
cover. Cover by Rader, interior illustrations by Victor Olson.
(not in the notebook: Midwood
34-627 – TOO YOUNG, TOO WILD by Curtis, reuses cover art from Midwood 60, ALL
THE WAY.) |

|

|
196. January 1966 – Midwood “The Honest World” by Collier – Three
bored women, near one in bikini on ground, girl in shorts on car fender,
distant girl on veranda smoking.
Midwood 32-631 – THE
DISCONTENTED by Collier, 1966. |

Cover art by Victor
Olson |
197. February 1966 –
Midwood 8 b&w inside for double novel #34-625 “Search For Sin” & “No
Man is Owned”.
Midwood 34-625 – SEARCH FOR SIN
/ NIGHT SHIFT NURSE by Castleman / Wilson, 1966. Cover by Victor Olson. Nice
companion to HIP CHICK as that book has a Rader cover and Olson interiors,
while this book has an Olson cover and Rader interiors. (The Olson cover is re-used from Midwood
F241, THE PLEASURE AND THE PAIN.) |

|
198. February 1966 –
Midwood cover for #34-635. Standing blonde in blue panties, bed in
background.
Midwood 34-663 – BUNDLE OF JOY
/ GIRLS ON THE LOOSE by Norman Anderson King ((Robert Tralins) / Linda Michaels
(Julie Ellis), 1966. In this case the
cover described does not match the cover for #34-635, shown below. Perhaps
this cover was planned for #34-635, but a last minute change was made. |

|
199. February 1966 – Midwood cover of male lying face down on bed
with blue bottom pajamas, female bending over him in blue top pajamas.
Midwood 34-665 – FIRST CAME CATHY
by Collier, 1966. Reprints #F263 with new title and different Rader cover.
Re-used on #34-913 a year later. |

Cover by Robert
Maguire |
200. February 1966 – Midwood 8 b&w inside line drawings for book
#34-635 (Devil in
Town &
Big
City
Campus). $400.
Midwood 34-635 – GOODBYE
INNOCENCE / BIG CITY CAMPUS by King (Robert Tralins) / Michaels (Julie Ellis),
1966. Cover by Robert Maguire, interior illustrations by Paul Rader. See Rader’s entry 198 above. This is the
cover Midwood used instead. This art is re-used from Midwood F206, CAMPUS SEX
CLUB. As Rader has noted, these are line drawings not plates. It’s hard to
believe Midwood paid him more for these crudely reproduced sketches than they
did for any of his cover paintings. |

|
201. March 1966 – Midwood – Girl in pink panties lying on tummy,
talking into telephone.
Midwood 34-651 – YOUNG AND RESTLESS / THREE EASY LESSONS
by Shaffer / Stevens, 1966. Cover by Rader, interior illustrations by an
unknown artist. |
202. March 1966 – Midwood – Girl in black negligee and man on bed,
grim hubby in doorway.
Midwood 34-771 – PART TIME WIFE
/ PLAY FOR KEEPS by Rawley / Roberts, 1967. No 1966 Midwood matches this
cover art description, but this 1967 Midwood appears to be the painting Rader
is describing – minus the man on the bed. |

|
203. March 1966 –
Midwood double 34-648 eight b&w inside illustrations.
Midwood 34-648 – NYMPH IN
NYLONS / A WILLING WORKER by Moore / Roote, 1966. Cover by an unknown artist,
interior line drawings by Paul Rader. Some have suggested this is a Rader
cover, but there is no mention of it in his notebooks. I believe it is one of
the many Midwoods that are like Rader. |

|

white bed, knees drawn up. High view, high key background.
Midwood 34-679 - GIRL IN THE
MIDDLE by Thompson, 1966. Cover is from plate 7 of Midwood 34-562 shown
above. |
212. June 1966 – Midwood – For repainting girl’s head and background
of another artist’s illustration of couple with red background. $50.
This is an interesting
variation in the usual notebook entries, although this kind of repainting
often happened in the paperback publishing world. We are not sure which cover
Rader repainted, and there are several Midwoods around this time of a couple
with a red background. But this guess seems the best guess, for this woman
looks like a Rader model to me. This is Midwood 33-700, WHY PLAY GAMES? The other
artist is probably George Alvara. |

|
213. June 1966 – Midwood. Brandy Jones – dark haired girl in yellow
shift in front of Southern colonial mansion – man in doorway – dark brick
background.
Midwood 34-694 – BRANDY JONES
by Thompson, 1966. Rader’s painting has been cropped, and the man in the doorway, and Rader’s signature (which was on the step
under her shoe) are gone. |

|
