GEORGE ZIEL CHECKLIST

JOVE

ELENA by Marilyn Granbeck, Jove B4420, 1977. This is from my friend Ruben at paperbackart.com . The woman does not immediately look like a Ziel model but everything else looks like Ziel to me: the man, the pose, the composition all fit. And we know Ziel was painting for Jove in 1977. So as they say in court, the preponderance of evidence leans toward this being a cover painting by George Ziel.

Jove 0-515-04515-2 – ANISE by Patricia Phillips, 1978. Thanks to Karla for her George Ziel Shelf at Goodreads.

NGAIO MARSH UNFORM EDITION GRAVE MISTAKE – 0515-05369-4, Jan 1980. Since Jove did not publish these in numerical order (with some reprints having earlier numbers than the first printing), this list is in chronological order.  Many of them were reprinted with the same cover art numerous times with different ISBNs for different cover prices. Some of the covers shown are reprints with same art, but the numbers listed here are the first printings with Ziel covers.

6

DEATH AND THE DANCING FOOTMAN – 0515-05409-7, Jan 1980. Somebody, either Ziel or the art director at Jove, works a neat trick with this series by continuing Ziel’s art under the author’s name. Her name becomes a part of the cover art. Usually this just means a continuation of the background color, but it is quite striking on DEATH AND THE DANCING FOOTMAN (where the man’s balding forehead looms under the letters A, R & S) and on ARTISTS IN CRIME, below.

SINGING IN THE SHROUDS – 0515-06018-6, Aug 1982. George Ziel and Ngaio Marsh both passed away early in 1982, so Ziel was unavailable to illustrate her thirty-second and final novel, LIGHT THICKENS. The Marsh Jove Uniform Edition by George Ziel stands at 31 with this book possibly his final new appearance on any book.

0-515-05469-0 ANALISE – Gregory, 1981. During the period Ziel was doing the Ngaio Marsh series, this Ziel cover also appeared. We recognize the closed eyes, “hands on”, and touching faces from his Avon covers of the same period.

Jove 0-515-05374-0 - ALL THAT JAZZ by H.B. Gilmour, 1979. Movie tie-in.

Jove 0-515-05130-6 - PUBLIC MURDERS by Bill Granger, 1980.

Jove 0-515-05480-1 - THE BORODINS: LOVE & HONOR by Leslie Arlen, 1980. Maybe Ziel.

This cover art was re-used several times on book club hardcovers and foreign editions.

The first in a six-volume series. Borodins 2, 3 and 4 are all signed by another artist with a signature I can not decipher. This cover may also be by that artist, although several things about it remind us of Ziel, who was painting for Jove in 1980. Borodins 5 & 6, published after Ziel's death, are the work of another unknown artist.

THE GANGSTER CHRONICLES by Michael Lasker & Richard Alan Simmons, Jove K5808, 1981. TV tie-in.
