PAPERBACK LIBRARY

There is one Ziel Paperback Library in the price guides. We suggest here that Ziel did many more uncredited covers for this publisher. We have over 40 on this list, with a good chance there are others still to be identified.  Paperback Library did many dark Gothics from a number of fine artists including Victor Kalin and Lou Marchetti.  Certain thematic touches identify many of the covers shown here as the work of one unique artist. Our Paperback Library checklist has been reviewed by Ziel’s Art Director, Rolf Erikson.

Making sense out of the convoluted numbering system used by Paperback Library is another matter. Normally, showing the books in numerical order works for me. That doesn’t work with Paperback Library.  For unknown reasons they chose not to publish their books in logical order. To show you how they published these 40 books, for this publisher only we ignore numerical order and show the books by publication date. Starting with 52-113, they first used a 50- series with 5-digit numbering, like 53-333.  The first two numbers are a price code: 52 is 50c, 53 is 60c, 54 is 75c and so on.  It’s those last three digits that don’t follow the rules.

When they got to the end of 1968 they had used up all the three-digit numbers from 101 to 999, so they started a 60- series with 62-001. The 60- series continued on into the 70- series in the mid-1970s, when they became Warner Paperback Library and then just Warner Books.  The 60- series books are (mostly) in order.

So, for whatever reason, this is the order they published their books in:

B101 through S112 (1961)

52-113 (1961) through 52-329 (1964)

54-801 (1965) through 52-999 (Aug 1966)

50-331 (Aug 1966) through 54-796 (1968) & 54-797 (1969)

62-001 (1968) & 66-002 (1969) and so on…

In other words, in the 50- series, the 800 & 900 books are out of order, falling between 329 and 331.  When they got to 52-998, MIKE MARS IN ORBIT (Aug 1966) and 52-999, BEYOND THE STRANGE (July 1966), their next numbers, published that same summer, are 50-331, MARIE WARREN NIGHT NURSE (Aug 1966) and 53-332, WHAT’S HAPPENING (Aug 1966).  And that oddball numbering leap occurred only because they had followed 52-329 with the -800 and -900 series back in 1965. Since Ziel’s first PB Libraries are -800 & -900s we show those first, then the -330s and so on.

When they got to the end of the 50-700s in 68/69, they’d already used 801-999, so they started over with 62-001 and the 60- series followed from there.

53-756 BLACK CANDLE – Randell, Sept 1968.
PURSUIT ON GANYMEDE by Michael D. Resnick, Paperback Library 52-760, 1968. I consider this a brilliant find by my friend Ruben at paperbackart.com . There is another PB Library by Mike Resnick, THE GODDESS OF GANYMEDE, with a cover by Jeff Jones. So naturally, everyone just assumed that this similar unsigned cover on the second Ganymede book had to be Jeff Jones too. But Ruben knows the work of both of these artists well, and he was studying PURSUIT ON GANYMEDE one day when he realized this is not a Jones cover.  This is a George Ziel cover.

63-790 THE GARDEN OF EVIL – Stoker, Feb 1969. 2nd printing reprints 53-946 (1966, cover by Victor Kalin) with new cover art. This book is numbered out of order. According to Paperback Library’s numbering system, the date for 63-790 should have been 1972. (See for example the date on 65-788, below.)  The copyright date inside this book, Feb 1969, is when 53-790 should have appeared.  For example, the date on 53-795 is 1969. If there is a 53-790 I’ve never seen it. This came out around the time Paperback Library was switching from their 50-000 series to the 60-000 series. 3
54-797 GABRIELLE – Norris, Sept 1969. Third printing, with new cover art. 4
5 63-043 THE HOUSE THAT FEAR BUILT – Knye, 1969. Like many of the women who wrote Gothics, Cassandra Knye was a man’s pen name, in this case two science fiction writers named Thomas Disch and John Sladek.
63-150 HAWTHORNE Wolff, 1969.
65-230 MANTEE – Hensler, Dec 1969.  7
63-233 THE GOVERNESS – Cromwell, 1969. 8
9 63-202 THE PRISONER OF GARVE – Shulman, 1970.
0 63-254 CAMERON CASTLE – Ross, 1970.  Reprints 52-437 with different (Ziel?) cover. Hard to confirm the artist of this unsigned cover, but it does have windswept long black hair, a gnarled barren tree and a misty moon lighting up the clouds. Ziel used all those things regularly, but he was not the only Paperback Library artist to use these elements (and there are several of these Marilyn Ross reprints that may or may not be Ziels). His covers often convey exactly this mood with their distinctive color palette.
64-322 THE LONGSTREET LEGACY – Ashe, Mar 1970.  9
63-404 SATAN’S ROCK – Ross, 1970. Reprints 52-947 with new cover art. 8
7 65-764 CONOVER’S FOLLY – Daniels, 1971.
6 65-788 DARK STARS OVER SEACREST – Ross, Feb 1972. (Since we are showing these books in the order published rather than numerically, 63-790 appears above in 1969.) By 1973 Paperback Library had evolved into Warner Paperback Library, later Warner Books. Ziel’s long association with this line continued there on a couple covers shown under Warner Books below.
