WRITING AS LAWRENCE BLOCK

I. 1958-1976: PAPERBACK WRITER

The first time Lawrence Block’s name appeared in print was when his first short story, “You Can’t Lose”, was published in the February 1958 issue of MANHUNT.

This now scarce magazine has cover art by Michael.

“You Can’t Lose” and all of Block’s other early crime digest and men’s mag stories were later collected in the anthology ONE NIGHT STANDS AND LOST WEEKENDS.

The first book published under the byline Lawrence Block was MONA, Gold Medal s1085, February 1961. At least nineteen of his pseudonymous books were in print before 1961. MONA was written as an Andrew Shaw thriller and Block’s agent felt it was good enough to send to Gold Medal. The cover copy includes the words “sweet slow death” and the back cover begins “Grifter’s Game”.

UK PB: Gold Medal (UK) 652 uses same cover. Not shown.

THE NIGHT AND THE MUSIC – Telemachus Press, 2011. Softcover.

Scudder #18.

The Matthew Scudder Stories all collected in one volume, including a couple appearing here for the first time in book form.

Another recent discovery of a “lost” Lawrence Block short story was “Part of the Job” in the December 1967 issue of DAPPER.

Mr. Block figures he wrote “Part of the Job” for ALFRED HITCHCOCK’S MYSTERY MAGAZINE in 1962 or 1963, but they passed on it and he lost track of it.

His agent, Scott Meredith, must have sold it to DAPPER in 1967, after Block had left the Scott Meredith Literary Agency. Unlike most of the magazines he was writing for in 1962, AHMM is still in print, so he was able to see it published there at last in the March 2012 issue.

WEASELS RIPPED MY FLESH! – Edited by Robert Deis, with Josh Alan Friedman & Wyatt Doyle – New Texture, 2012. Softcover.

A collection of stories from men’s adventure magazines includes two by Lawrence Block writing as Sheldon Lord: “Just Window Shopping” (from MAN’S, December 1962) and “She Doesn’t Want You” (from REAL MEN, June 1958).

CATCH AND RELEASE – Hard Case Crime, September 2013.  Cover by Ken Laager. 16 stories and a stage play.

Somebody came up with a great idea to collect all the afterwords Lawrence Block had written about his books, and all the new pieces about the ebook editions of his early pseudonym books. And it was an even better idea to publish them in book form.  This volume is a font of valuable information for Block collectors.

I’m not sure how many books Lawrence Block has written, but there are 170 on this checklist. And there are more to come….

Above: samples of Lawrence Block stories from ALFRED HITCHCOCK MYSTERY MAGAZINE. All of these stories were collected in ENOUGH ROPE.
