CHARLES COPELAND CHECKLIST – 2011 UPDATE

My thanks to all of you who helped make my idea to do the first Charles Copeland checklist turn into reality. Dan Zimmer presented a magazine version of it in ILLUSTRATION #33 (Spring 2011) and I think he did a beautiful job. (I still have a few copies available at $15., if you’d like a signed one, email me.) As always a few things came to light as a result of the checklist. These are the additions and corrections of books and magazines we will be incorporating into the Lynn Munroe Books website on Copeland:

MAGAZINES

MALE ANNUAL #2 – 1964.  Bill Devine, collector and editor of DEVINE’S GUIDE TO MEN’S ADVENTURE MAGAZINES, turned up this action-packed annual which includes “The Death Peddler” (from FOR YOUR EYES ONLY), a James Bond story by Ian Fleming illustrated by Gil Cohen, and “My Body is For Kicks”, “suspense novel” version of the 1962 Gold Medal thriller SOMEONE AND FELICIA WARWICK by Raymond Mason, with the two illustrations shown here by Charles Copeland.

Second-page Copeland illustration for “My Body is For Kicks.”

As I said on the checklist, nobody has seen every issue of every men’s mag. One that I missed with Copeland in it was the February 1961 issue of MAN’S WORLD. My ever-resourceful friends at American Art Archives turned up a copy. This is “The Free Love Ship of Brother Cyrus Spragg”.

MALE November 1972 – “Locker Room Nude”

PAPERBACKS

I suggested on the checklist that there had to be other Nick Carter paperback covers from Award Books with Copeland covers. To date I’ve seen two more. This is THE CHINA DOLL, Award A105F, 1964.

The 1965 third printing is shown. The 1968 fourth printing, Award A380X, has the same cover.

BEIRUT INCIDENT, Award AQ1333, 1974, has an uncredited cover, obviously the work of the same artist as THE MAN WHO SOLD DEATH, shown on our checklist, which I got from the Copeland family.

Just as THE MAN WHO SOLD DEATH was also found in a Charter reprint, here is BEIRUT INCIDENT, Ace Charter 05381-5, from 1975.

My friend Ruben from paperbackart.com sent me this Berkley Gothic with a beautiful Copeland cover. This is THE HAUNTING OF CLIFFSIDE by Letton, Berkley 0-425-03391-0, 1977.

I thought I had looked at most of the Queen-Size Gothics from Popular Library, but it’s hard to see them all now 35 years after publication. Here is a signed Copeland cover on THE COUNT OF VAN RHEEDEN CASTLE by Annjeanette Scott, Popular Library 445-08474-X, 1976.

Please contact me if you find Copeland cover art not on our catalog. This is AULDEARN HOUSE by Barbara Riefe, Popular Library 445-03194-150 from 1977.
